After months of meticulous planning, Play Golf Minnesota Week 2009 officially kicked off on Monday, April 27 at Hazeltine National Golf Course.  Of course, even after said fastidious planning, we still had to be ready to deal with the one thing we have no control over: the weather.  Let’s be realistic: it’s April in Minnesota.  No matter how prepared we are, if six inches of snow accumulate over the weekend — hardly ideal golf weather — there’s not much we can do about it.  Thankfully, the weather proved cooperative; other than a bit of halfhearted drizzle on Monday morning, the week was mostly sunny and fairly warm, perfect for hitting the links.

In addition to nice weather, this year’s Play Golf Minnesota Week had a great turnout — more than 75 courses participated by offering special deals and events, and the clubs I stopped by had plenty of people getting back into the swing of things on the course.  With great deals at local clubs, including 2-for-1 green fees, free adult green fees with a paid junior golfer and free lessons with PGA professionals, it’s hard to find a reason not to head to the nearest course.

With coverage in television, radio, print and online media in the Twin Cities and across the state, I’d consider the official opener to the Minnesota golf season a success.  The idea behind Play Golf Minnesota Week is to get Minnesotans excited about the game and getting back on the course (or hitting the links for the first time for new players), and I hope that the media coverage helped create awareness and inspired people to grab their clubs and hit the links.
