Asian Pacific Cultural Center Capital Campaign Video

Looking back on nearly 5 years of StoryTeller work, it’s interesting to watch some of our older projects because it takes me back to that specific time in my life. One of the first videos that I produced, along with photojournalist Neil Pursley, was a fundraising piece for the Asian Pacific Cultural Center (APCC).  The APCC was to be a new building and organization in St. Paul that would be a place where all Asian Americans could go to connect or learn about their heritage.  As an adopted Korean, I was especially connected with the mission of the organization and volunteered as a member of the capital campaign.

The organization did not receive necessary funding to move forward in 2007 and subsequently, the capital campaign has temporarily been put on hold.  However, this video was a piece that was used by the APCC to help explain the vision and purpose of the organization.  We used this on a number of capital campaign meetings with foundations and potential donors. It quickly detailed the need for the organization and provided a peak into the life of Asian Americans living in Minnesota.

On a personal note, the project allowed me to connect even more with the Asian American and adopted Korean community. We spoke with so many people who shared with us wonderful personal stories of their lives growing up or living in Minnesota.  Most of those stories were not captured for this piece, but they are pieces of the lives of others that I carry with me and that flow back to me when I watch this clip.

This project was shot over the course of several months and we subsequently updated it two more times. This version is the 2nd or 3rd iteration, yet each time we revised it, we made sure it kept its original message and meaning.
