Special Olympics Athletes and PGA Pros Team Up For State Open Pro-Am, July 23
Alec Kelsey is a great athlete – but he’s not your typical high school senior. After spending 18 days in a coma at age four, doctors didn’t know if he would ever wake up, let alone play sports. But Alec has defied odds his entire life — recovering from a devastating illness, coping with cognitive delays due to bilateral brain damage, dealing with life-threatening seizures on a daily basis – and is now involved in athletics like most teenage boys. An avid golfer, Alec is one of 27 Special Olympics athletes participating in the Minnesota State Open Pro-Am on July 23, kicking off the State Open weekend.

Dr. Irv Fradkin — Still Passionate, and Still Helping Students
I have a confession to make: I love old people. Really. I think my grandpa and grandma are about the cutest things on the face of the planet, and I giggle about little old men and women the way some people coo over babies. Anyway, my point is, yesterday I met one of the cutest little old men I’ve ever seen — but Dr. Irving Fradkin is more than just a pretty face. Even at 90, while most people his age are well into retirement, Dr. Fradkin is still giving back to the community and helping young people across the United States have a chance at going to college.
Rees Jones Visits Hazeltine National Golf Club
Let’s just say it wasn’t your typical stroll around the golf course last Wednesday morning when Rees Jones toured Hazeltine National Golf Club. Jones, renowned golf course architect and mastermind behind the most recent changes at Hazeltine, is also the son of Robert Trent Jones who put his signature on Hazeltine National shortly after the club opened. Flanked by a bevy of club board members, golf staff and media, Mr. Jones began walking the course on hole number one at 10:10 a.m. and completed the walk at 4:15 p.m. Aside from a break for lunch, the tour included discussions about tee locations, course set up for members and for the 2009 PGA Championship.

M Squared Group Principal Named to Wishes & More Board of Directors
M Squared Group, a Twin Cities marketing firm, announced that Jason Muhlstein was named to the board of directors of Wishes & More, a nonprofit organization with a mission of granting wishes to seriously ill children, as well as providing scholarships and memorials.
A volunteer with the organization for a number of years, Muhlstein also brought in M Squared Group to shape the Wishes & More marketing strategy. Part of that marketing plan was to help the organization promote one of its major fundraisers of the year – a roast of boxing legend Scott LeDoux on May 3, 2009. The event is expected to draw some of the biggest names in boxing, including Sugar Ray Leonard and is being held at the Marriott City Center in downtown Minneapolis.
In a time when many nonprofits are faced with the fundraising challenges a tight economy brings, organizations are relying heavily on marketing to share their message and leverage their existing efforts to engage those most likely to volunteer and contribute to their cause.
“We’re delighted to have Jason on our board,” said Karla Blomberg, executive director of Wishes & More. “Not only does he bring a strong business acumen, but also a sensitivity and compassion for our mission. That’s exactly what every successful nonprofit needs.”
Muhlstein, of Minneapolis, is a principal at M Squared Group. He is a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Penn Cycle Helps Commuters Gear up for Road Construction Season
A new season is upon Minnesota: road contruction. This year, with traffic snarled due to I-35 construction, local bike retailers expect to see an increase in customers looking to outfit their bikes for commuting.
Pat Sorenson, owner of Penn Cycle, is ready for the influx in two-wheeled commuters. “Last summer’s gas prices got more people on their bikes,” he said. “We expect that this year’s major road construction – combined with concerns about the economy – will generate even more interest in biking to work.”
To help its customers navigate around the spring and summer construction, Penn Cycle is giving its customers free maps that show quicker routes in and out of downtown. Sorenson also expects to see an uptick in maintenance checks as people get ready to ride again.
“It’s important to have bikes serviced after being stored away for the winter,” Sorenson said. “Everything from tires, rims and spokes to bearings and pedals should be checked to ensure a safe ride.”
Gearing Up
In addition to having bikes in proper working order, the right gear can make the cycling commute much more enjoyable. Penn Cycle recommends the following products that allow for a safer, smoother ride.
- A new line of bags, called Detour Bags, feature a rubber bottom, allowing the bags to stand up. Great for biking to work or for trips to the store.
- For the early morning or late evening commuter, nothing’s more important than lighting. Two new products – the Blackburn Flea Lights and NiteRider MiNewt Commuter Light – are rechargable, super bright and high quality. In fact, the Blackburn Flea Lights can be fully recharged from seemingly old batteries around the house.
- For confident riding in all conditions, the Bontrager Hardcase Tires feature all the grip a rider needs as well as triple puncture protection, so commuters can spend more time riding and less time on the side of the road.
